The cost of shaving is what you make of it. With that in mind you can get a fantastic shave for relatively low cost. The per unit cost is pretty low and the cost upfront is pretty minimal as well.
Razors:
For the razor, I would go with a razor that is priced moderately that gets good reviews. I would start with a moderate aggressiveness to learn what your skin likes. The brands I would recommend would be Mühle, Merkur, Parker, Edwin Jagger for mass produced good razors. For premium razors look at Blackland, Carbon Shaving Co., Karve Shaving., Henson, Leaf, and many more. There are many different options that you have. These can range from 20-30 dollars to hundreds. With that in mind buy a razor with features you want that is within your budget.
Razor Blades:
For cost effectiveness the Astra Platinum are a great option for a decent sensitive skin shave and a cost of 8 cents a blade. There is the Gillette Platinum Blue double edge at a cost of 14 cents a blade. The Wilkinson Sword is the cheapest at 6 cents a blade and gets solid reviews.
I personally prefer the Feather Hi-Stainless and the Wizamet Super Iridium blades. Both of these blades will run a lot more expensive at about 50 cents a blade.
For the most part it is cheaper to try a small pack of blades that you will pay a higher per unit price for. Even though you are paying a slightly higher per unit cost you are not stuck with a ton of blades that you dislike.
Shaving Creams/Soaps:
I really like the Cremo Shaving creams. Great lather and a good price. They quote that you “Have a 90 day supply” I think that is an over estimation but still a great value for a great product. When it comes to soaps the longevity can be a varying amount. Most manufacturers do a standard 4 ounces in their soaps. From what I have seen average pricing for soaps is about 20 dollars. You can find many quality soaps for competitive prices. When it comes to brands that have very good pricing the ones that seem to always show up are Night Watch Soap Co, Summer Break Soap Co, and Van Yulay. There are many other brands I did not mention because this list would be super long. Make sure to support artisan makers. They work hard to deliver a superior product and based on rising production and supply costs they may have to increase costs.
Brushes:
I will really stress again to support artisan makers. Brushes are one of the biggest markets for creative crafting within shaving. There are many artisan makers that make brushes that will fit your needs. I highly recommend finding some on social media and finding one within your price range. Many of them would be very happy to answer your questions! I currently do not have any artisan maker brushes but that will soon change as I have realized the importance. If you are looking for the cheapest brushes possible that will give you the performance you are looking for I highly recommend the Omega Boar Brushes. For the money they are very difficult to beat.
Aftershaves:
I generally buy the aftershave splash that goes with the soaps I get. I do keep others in my stock at all times. My favorite being the Nivea Post shave balms. They do a great job for the cost and I will continue to keep them in the rotation.
