This will be a list of products that are great for all shaving enthusiasts in all price ranges! I did not include razors or blades on this list because I think it can be harder to chose a razor for another person. In the case you know exactly what they want in a razor then you probably don’t need a list. As for razor blades I feel that those are even more personal because of the different cutting characteristics. With that in mind, If you would like a recommendation for either of these things, send me a dm on social media and/or an email. Thanks!
AFTERSHAVE PRODUCTS
For the money, the Nivea sensitive skin post shave balm is a difficult option to beat. Being $2.06 per OZ it is a pretty good deal and you can use the product and not feel like you are wasting it! With a super light scent and very lightweight texture it is a good all around product that I will continue to keep for use.
I really like the Proraso Red Aftershave. It is another lightweight splash that has a nice scent and gives decent moisture. It has a sandalwood scent that sticks around and has that slight after-scent of alcohol. With the scent in mind, it is $4.12 per OZ making it still a pretty cheap product because you are only using a little bit at a time. Another nice feature is the other products offered in each of the same scents.
I highly recommend using small batch brands and small business products. With that in mind, you can make sure your concerns are met. This always comes with a cost so you will pay more per unit for small batch or specialty products. To put it into perspective, you can ensure that it is sourced ethically and made in a country of your choice with materials that you desire. Best of all you are supporting a small business! For aftershave splashes, my current favorites are the Night Watch Soap Co. “Tha Dew” and “Havana Nights”. Both of these scents are dynamic, long lasting, and will rehydrate your face after a shave.
SHAVING PRODUCTS
For shaving creams my two favorites as of now are the Proraso Red Cream and the Cremo Palo Santo Shaving Cream. Both of these products have a great scent and make a good lather with a proper brush and technique. The Proraso comes in at $1.92 per OZ and the Cremo comes in at $3.33 per OZ.
For shaving soaps my current favorites are the Night Watch Soap Co. “Tha Dew” ,”Havana Nights” and the Maggard Razors “Tobacco and Leather”. All of these are fantastic smelling soaps that create a generous lather. The Maggard comes out to be $4.49 per OZ and the Night Watch comes out to be $4.50 per OZ making both of these products a very competitive product. With this in mind, your decisions should be based on scent, price, and performance. I also will try and support small business when I can. So like everything else, do your research and find a scent you like with a good base and comparable prices!
ACCESSORIES
A Shaving brush is a great option because there is so many variations and styles out there. The diversity makes it possible for a brush to be a fantastic gift that if taken care of can last years. There is no “Best Brush” in the concept that many brushes have different strengths and weaknesses. The biggest factor on deciding on a brush is price. The easiest entry into brushes is going to be Boar’s Hair brushes. These can be stiff but break in great with some care. I can recommend the Omega Professional line up for boar brushes. Priced at around $13 this is a great, inexpensive option that will serve every purpose it was intended. If you have more of a budget on brushes but don’t want to spend too much there is a couple of options. One thing I would recommend is to not buy the cheapest version of a brush possible. Make sure it is a reputable brand or an artisan creator. In this price area there are a lot of badger and synthetic brushes that are fantastic. I really like the Parker Badger Brushes. I have the silvertip version but I am sure the other versions are great as well. I also like the Mühle silvertip synthetics. They are fantastic and dry very fast for travel. Many of times if a product is “too good to be true” it is, so be wary. I have another post on the grades of brushes and what they mean so if you are confused check that out. The price thing goes both ways though. Just because it is more expensive does not necessarily make it a better product. Support growing small businesses because likely you will get a equal or superior product for a competitive price and you are supporting a small business!
The best advice I can give is to find a gift that they will enjoy for a cost you can afford. Any father that I have met will appreciate the gesture especially if they are interested in shaving.
Keep that shave slick!
